Settlements

Pending Cases and personal injury lawsuits and settlements:
- Client and sibling bitten all night by bed bugs at a well known hotel in Chicagoland area.  Staff refused to move clients out of the infested room instead leaving them in the room all night after they had asked for a room change.  Client has suffered post traumatic like symptoms and asthma due to a serious allergic reaction to the bites and subsequent treatment.

- Clients, a young bi racial couple, were wrongly and improperly accused of using counterfeit currency in a large well known store operating as a chain, resulting in defamation, slander and two innocent clients' lawfully purchased property being taken from their private residence without a warrant.  While we can appreciate zealous police work, to preserve a life and ensure safety,  as former prosecutors we are deeply troubled as to why the police did not first determine whether the large chain was wrongly accusing two young innocent people, particularly since they already sold them the goods after checking the bills in their store.  The clients even tried to explain to the police when they had come into their home to take the goods that they were bills they got from their bank just that day.  Instead the police began to accuse them of "printing bills at home"  and took their property without a warrant or legal order and cause.  After the government confirmed that the currency was legal - one of the clients tried to go back to the store to get his purchased property from a loss prevention person who refused to give him back his property.  At first they said you do not have a receipt.   Client exclaimed - receipt?  You directed police to take my property after accusing me of using illegal currency which was not illegal currency.  Then the loss prevention folks openly accused him of damaging the property.  Another lie.  Client was left shaking, in shock and frightened. We were left wondering, are we in pre-civil rights days in the deep south again?  The false and public accusation of - you broke the goods- was another outright lie.  The couple had just bought the goods and then the police busted in their home and took it so fast, without a warrant - there was no time to break anything.  They had been simply trying to set it up for use in their home - to listen to music.  The store's loss prevention team even called the police in again when the client simply had come in to get his goods which the police directed him that he should do immediately.  Talk about abuse of process again.  Thankfully the police did nothing this time and later on they even returned the couple's currency without a hitch.  This case merits an investigation into the practices of loss prevention, staff and maybe police in the way they handled the false accusation and obvious abuse of civil rights and due process violations by a financially powerful chain.
